John Mayer Trashes Guitar Hero

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone John Mayer was asked for his thoughts on Guitar Hero:
How do you feel about the whole Guitar Hero-game phenomenon?
I don’t ever want to be the kind of guy who rails against whatever progress has taken place. But Guitar Hero was devised to bring the guitar-playing experience to the masses without them having to put anything into it. And having done both, there’s nothing like really playing guitar. I mean, what would you rather drive, a Ferrari or one of those amusement-park cars on a track?
See, John Mayer, the thing is, you can’t really compare playing real guitar and playing Guitar Hero. They are two separate things. Although Guitar Hero was designed based on a real guitar and trys to mimic its functions as best as possible, the fact is, a real guitar is designed for playing music, and Guitar Hero is a game designed for entertainment. A job which it does pretty well. One of the biggest reason Guitar Hero is so popular is becuase it is just plain fun.
Yeah, I’ll drive my Ferrari to the amusement park, but when im there youll be damn sure to see me on the go carts.

He’s not talking about go carts. he’s talkin about the actual cars on the rails that you just sit there and it drives itself but uh. have fun with that.
Did he tell you that personally?
wait. don’t answer. Why? because it doesnt matter.
Guitar Hero is still a game designed for entertainment and a guitar is still used to create music. And in fact if John Mayer is “rallying against progress”, of music i assume, he should be happy that guitar hero came along. Because i know there is at least one kid out there if not thousands that played guitar hero, and in turn prompted them to pick up a real guitar, and without guitar hero may have never had the urge to try. Putting a real guitar in a in an otherwise uninterested persons hands is progress in my opinion. You never know, that new guitarist could be the next Jimmy Page.
